HC Deb 24 July 1987 vol 120 c566W
Mr. Austin Mitchell

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what effect the increase in the exchange rate since 1972 has had on the increase in incomes in the industries not producing internationally traded goods and services.

Mr. Lilley

The sterling exchange rate index has fallen rather than increased since 1972. It is not possible to estimate the effect of the exchange rate changes on incomes in industries producing non-traded goods and services since this depends on what would otherwise have happened and the operation of policy.

Mr. Austin Mitchell

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will publish in the Official Report a table showing information available to him on the degree of correlation between changes in the exchange rates and changes in consumer prices in the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Germany and Japan between turning points in the period 1957 and 1986.

Mr. Lilley

I refer the hon. Member to "International Financial Statistics Yearbook" (1986) published by the International Monetary Fund.
