HC Deb 24 July 1987 vol 120 c709W
Mr. Michael Brown

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what grant is currently paid by his Department to Action on Smoking and Health in the current year; what grant will he paid in the succeeding year; and when he last had a meeting with the organisation's officers.

Mrs. Currie

The full amount that ASH will receive this year has still to be decided; it has so far received £88,500. The level of grant in aid for 1988–89 has yet to be discussed. Officials last met officers of ASH formally on 7 May. I am hoping to visit the organisation's headquarters shortly.

Mr. Michael Brown

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what plans he has to transfer the funding of Action on Smoking and Health from public to private sources.

Mrs. Currie

None. However last year ASH received £36,000 from membership subscriptions and sales of literature, and estimates for 1987–88 from this source are in excess of that amount. They work closely with industry as the recent publication "Smoking Policies at Work" demonstrates.
