§ Mr. Home Robertsonasked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will initiate a comprehensive review of safety and other factors on the A1 road between Edinburgh and the English border, involving consultation with local communities and road users; and if he will publish a report on Her Majesty's Government's plans for the future development of that road.
§ Lord James Douglas-HamiltonThe safety of the A1, and of all other Scottish trunk roads, is continuously under review. All potential accident black spots are automatically inspected and, when necessary, remedial work is carried out. As to future plans, consultants are currently examining roads south of Edinburgh with a view to recommending a route strategy. I shall make an announcement about their findings in due course.
