HC Deb 23 July 1987 vol 120 cc307-9W
Mr. Caborn

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster if he will outline the actions taken by Her Majesty's Government to implement the voluntary ban on new investment in South Africa, as agreed by the Prime Minister at the Commonwealth review meeting in August 1986; and whether any mechanisms have been established to monitor this voluntary ban.

Mr. Alan Clark

My right hon. Friend the then Secretary of State for Trade and Industry wrote to the Chairman of the CBI, the British Industry Committee on South Africa and the United Kingdom South Africa Trade Association asking them to urge their members to comply with the voluntary ban on new investment in South Africa, the implementation of which was announced on 30 October 1986. In addition, officials of this Department wrote to companies identified as having interests in South Africa to draw their attention to this measure. The ban was also widely reported in the press.

No mechanism has been established to monitor this voluntary ban.

Mr. Caborn

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster if he will take steps to extend the voluntary ban on new investment in South Africa to include new investment in Namibia.

Mr. Alan Clark
