HC Deb 20 July 1987 vol 120 cc64-5W
Mr. Shersby

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what research is being funded by his Department into the nature and treatment of repetitive strain injury and tenosynovitis.

Mrs. Currie

The Department looks to the Medical Research Council, which is funded by the Department of Education and Science, to meet its biomedical research needs. The M RC is not currently supporting research into these conditions nor has it been asked by the Department to do so.

The Health and Safety Executive, which is funded by the Department of Employment, is supporting a study at the Institute of Occupational Medicine, Edinburgh, into occupational factors associated with upper limb repetitive strain injuries.

The University of Surrey is carrying out a study into the use of nuclear magnetic resonance imaging as a diagnostic tool for muscular skeletal disorders, which is relevant to tenosynovitis.
