asked Her Majesty's Government:

Which detention centres have been closed or changed to other uses since 1982 and how many places were there in each.

The Earl of Caithness

The following list shows the certified normal accommodation (CNA) of those establishments which were designated, in whole or in part, as detention centres on 31st December 1981 and which have, since then, been closed or changed to other uses:

Foston Hall 76
New Hall 114

In addition, North Sea Camp detention centre (CNA 182) will be converted to other use later this year. Medomsley (CNA 133) has, since 19th June 1987, been put to temporary use as an adult prison, and Blantyre House has been temporarily closed from 3rd July 1987.
