Mr. Ron Davies

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what were the number of incidents of water pollution recorded in Wales for each of the past five years in which there was loss of fish life; in how many of these cases there was a successful prosecution; and on how many an unsuccessful prosecution; what was the average level of the penalties imposed; what were the maximum penalties imposed; in how many cases compensation was awarded for the specific purpose of replacing fish stocks; and what were the average and the maximum of the amounts so awarded.

Mr. Grist

Information on fish kill incidents in the area covered by the Welsh water authority is contained in the "Environmental Digest for Wales", published by the Government Statistical Service, a copy of the table from the latest edition (No. 2 1985) is reproduced in the following table. Information on prosecutions is not held by this Department but I have asked the chairman of Welsh water to write and let the hon. Gentleman have such information that is available.
