HC Deb 15 July 1987 vol 119 cc486-7W
Mr. Batiste

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many civil servants are employed in his Department; and what is its budgeted expenditure for the current year.

Mr. Stanley

On 1 April 1987 there were 26,489 civil servants employed in the Northern Ireland Office and the Northern Ireland Departments. This figure includes those in administrative grades, and also scientific officers and professional and technical officers. It excludes prisons service grades, civilian search unit staff and a small number of casual staff. Total planned public expenditure for the Northern Ireland Office and the Northern Ireland Departments for the current year is £4,877 million (the "Government's Expenditure Plans 1987–88 to 1989–90", Vol. II, table 3.18 p.291).

Mr. Kilfedder

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many persons under 21 years of age were unemployed in Northern Ireland at the latest date; and how this compares with 1967, 1977 and 1982.

Mr. Viggers

At 14 May 1987, the latest date for which figures are available, there were a total of 22,106 unemployed claimants under 21 years of age in Northern Ireland. Figures on the number of unemployed claimants in this age group are not available for earlier years.
