HC Deb 12 January 1987 vol 108 c15W
24. Mr. Chapman

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what is his estimate of the total number of heavy goods vehicle and motor car registrations, respectively; and how these figures compare with ten years previously.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

At December 1985 the licensed stock of heavy goods vehicles in Great Britain was 432,000, which is 23 per cent. below the 1975 figure. These fewer vehicles moved 11 per cent. more tonne kilometres of goods than in 1975. Over the same period the stock of cars increased by 23 per cent. to 16½ million.
