asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer when the computerisation of the Inland Revenue will be completed.

The Inland Revenue is carrying out a number of major computerisation projects. The computerisation of the entire PAYE and schedule D systems will have been completed as planned by the end of 1988. This will be followed by a further project in local tax offices which will computerise the making of tax assessments on the earnings of companies. The Department has also embarked on a computerisation project in local collection offices to provide an on-line computer system. These projects should all have been completed by the early 1990s.
