§ Mr. Ashdownasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1) what information is available through (a) management information systems and (b) other reporting arrangements of the nature and extent of the operational consequences for Customs and Excise preventive work of budget ceilings for overtime working; and if he will make a statement;
(2) what range of duties of Customs and Excise officers engaged in preventive work require regular or rostered use of overtime; and if he will make a statement;
(3) if he will name and describe the administrative units to which overtime budgets are allocated for Customs and Excise preventive work; and if he will make a statement.
(4) if he will name and describe the budgets controlled at local and regional levels to provide overtime working on Customs and Excise preventive work; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. BrookeThe financial provision for the payment of overtime in the preventive service of Her Majesty's Customs and Excise is made in the Department's overtime budget which is administered by collectors controlling budget centres from regional offices (collections).
Management information and other reporting arrangements exist which enable the Department to determine the allocations of overtime budgets against perceived operational requirements. Most of the duties laid to preventive officers require some measure of regular or rostered overtime.
