HL Deb 26 February 1987 vol 485 cc431-2WA
Lord Melchett

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will confirm that a number of pesticides, including products containing captafoal, chlorothalonil, paraquet and aldicarb, are banned from agricultural use in West Germany, and whether pesticides which are banned in other EEC countries are subject to any special reviews in this country by the Advisory Committee on Pesticides.

Lord Belstead

We understand from the West German authorities that, apart from paraquat, products containing all the active ingredients mentioned are permitted for certain agricultural uses and the proposal to ban products containing paraquat is subject to legal proceedings.

Reviews of pesticides in Great Britain, as well as being carried out routinely, may be initiated at any time if there is evidence of a previously unsuspected risk or problem. The annual report of the Advisory Committee on Pesticides for 1985 (which is available in the Library) gives, in section D, some recent examples.
