Mrs. Chalker

My right hon. and learned Friend the Foreign Secretary and I attended the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels on 16 February.

The Council discussed the Commission proposals for new financial protocols for some of the Community's Mediterranean preferential partners. Discussion will continue at the March Council.

The Council discussed the Commission proposals for a draft mandate for an EC/Hungary trade and economic cooperation agreement and noted the Commission's wish for an early adoption of its mandate.

The Council discussed a continuation of the arrangements, agreed after the Chernobyl nuclear accident, limiting permissible contamination in food imported into the Community. Meeting in Political Co-operation, Foreign Ministers issued a statement on Palestinian camps in the Lebanon. A copy of the statement has been placed in the Library of the House.
