HC Deb 10 February 1987 vol 110 c189W
Mr. Craigen

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what discussions he has had with British Telecom regarding the retention of a Scottish dimension in its management structure and control.

Mr. Lang

In addition to discussions held between officials and British Telecom's territorial director for Scotland and Northern Ireland, my right hon. and learned Friend discussed BT's regional structure at a recent meeting with the company's chief executive.

While decisions relating to internal organisation and management are commercial judgments for the company itself, my right hon. and learned Friend fully recognises the importance for Scotland of a modern and efficient telecommunications service and, accordingly, will be following future developments with the closest interest. In this context, he also welcomes BT's decisions to create a Scottish advisory forum and to staff the new territorial organisation with advisers located in both Edinburgh and Leeds.
