Mr. Tom Clarke

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will publish in the Official Report, the information available to him on the numbers of children with statements under the Education Act 1981 in each local education authority in England; and what is his estimate in each case of the percentage of these children who are persons to whom section 29 of the National Assistance Act 1948 applies.

The information about children with statements, derived from returns by local education authorities, is set out in the following table. Assessments for the purposes of section 29 of the National Assistance Act 1948 are carried out by social services departments, and are a matter for my right hon. Friend, the Secretary of State for Social Services.
