asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many people were in prison at the most recent count.

Mr. Mellor

On 23 January 1987 the total prison population in England and Wales was 46,827 plus 58 Immigration Act detainees held on a temporary basis in Erlestoke.

On 31 January 1979, the nearest equivalent date for which figures are available, the total was 41,405.
