asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make a statement on the progress and plans for privatisation of water authorities.

As my right hon. Friend explained in his statement of 3 July 1986, we are preparing the necessary legislation and intend to proceed with the privatisation of the water authorities as soon as practicable.
