HC Deb 04 February 1987 vol 109 c721W
33. Mrs. Clwyd

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make a statement on the progress of UK 2000.

Mr. Waldegrave

By next month UK2000 expects to have 92 projects under way. A total of 2,600 community programme workers and 5,500 volunteers will be working on these projects. Further major projects also coming forward include reclaiming and improving many sites along the west midlands railway and canal networks, and an "environment week" in April or May. UK2000 is seeking to ensure that projects are of high quality and that good training and work experience is offered to participants. To date, £500,000 private sector sponsorship in cash and kind has been attracted. UK2000 now operates in both England and Wales. The Prince of Wales committee represents the Welsh participating organisations. Arrangements are being made to extend UK2000 to Scotland.
