§ Mr. Allen Adamsasked the Secretary of State for Energy when he now expects contracts for Sizewell B power station to be placed with Babcock Power Ltd.
§ Mr. GoodladSuch contracts are a matter for the CEGB. However, I understand that it has been the board's policy for some time not to release the manufacturing phases of contracts until after my right hon. Friend has decided whether or not to give consent to the station. As my right hon. Friend informed the hon. Member for Wells (Mr. Heathcoat-Amory) on 22 January, he wishes to hear the views of the House before he takes his decision. My right hon. Friend the Lord Privy Seal informed the House on 29 January that he is arranging a debate in the week beginning 23 February. My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State will take his decision as soon as possible thereafter.
§ Mr. Irvingasked the Secretary of State for Energy, in the light of recommendation 6(a) of the report on the Sizewell public inquiry by Sir Frank Layfield, concerning the review by the Health and Safety Executive of the extent of the area covered by emergency plans, if he will make it his policy to consider the potential cost implications of extending such areas before making a decision on the consent application for Sizewell B; if he will publish information of potential cost implications before the report is debated in the House; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. GoodladMy right hon. Friend has a quasi-judicial role in respect of the Central Electricity Generating Board's application to construct Sizewell B. It would not be proper for me to comment on the inspector's report, including the recommendations, before my right hon. Friend has taken his decision.
