HC Deb 04 February 1987 vol 109 cc679-80W
Mr. Dubs

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the cost of home leave for prisoners in 1985.

Mr. Mellor

Figures collected centrally do not distinguish between expenditure on home leave and expenditure on temporary release. In 1985–86, £232,094 was spent on home leave and temporary release. This figure includes travel, subsistence and accommodation allowances for young offenders but excludes expenditure on temporary release to hospital.

Mr. Dubs

asked the Secretary of State for the Horne Department what payments are made from public funds to prisoners on home leave.

Mr. Mellor

Adult prisoners on home leave receive all travelling expenses, subsistence for the journey and the cost of accommodation and food during the home leave period up to a maximum of £21 or £41 depending on the length of the leave. The person offering hospitality to the prisoner may also be eligible for financial help.

Mr. Dubs

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the maximum amount of money which a prisoner may take on home leave.

Mr. Mellor

£20 for terminal home leave and £10 for short home leave and pre-parole leave.
