asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if his Department will monitor and make statistics available about the numbers and types of planning applications on established green belt land and the decisions thereon made by local planning authorities or himself.

There is no central register of planning applications for development in the green belt. The number of appeals which, since 1985, have been recorded in the planning inspectorate's relevant case record system is too small to provide reliable statistical information at present.
