Comparable figures for the economically active are not available, and it is therefore not possible to provide meaningful unemployment rates. However, as at the same date, the unemployment rate for the Dundee travel-to-work area, the smallest relevant geographical area for which a rate can be given, was 15.8 per cent.

This information is available in the Library.

Mr. Ernie Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will publish data showing the average length of time a person spends on the unemployment register by age group for Dundee, Tayside and Scotland.

Mr. Lang

The information is not available in the form requested. The table below relates to the median, and not the average, duration of unemployment for claimants in each age group who had completed a period of unemployment in the city of Dundee district, Tayside region and Scotland in December 1986, the latest date for which information in available.
