HC Deb 04 February 1987 vol 109 cc676-7W
Mr. Barry Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what is his annual expenditure on research for his Department; what percentage of this is of his Department's total expenditure for each year since 1980; how much his Department has spent on research concerning industry in the years since 1980 in Wales; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Nicholas Edwards

[pursuant to his reply, 28 January 1987, c. 296]: Expenditure on research and development by the Welsh Office since 1981–82 (the earliest years for which figures are available) and these figures shown as a percentage of the Department's total annual expenditure, are as follows:

On industry matters the Department of Trade and Industry runs research schemes which cover Wales as well as England. Expenditure by the Department of Trade and Industry in Wales on support for innovation in 1985–86 was over £1.9 million. It is expected that a similar amount will be spent in 1986–87. Information for the years preceding 1985–86 could be separately identified only at disproportionate cost.
