HC Deb 02 February 1987 vol 109 cc533-4W
Mr. Kirkwood

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make a statement outlining the arrangements he has made to distribute the proposed EEC food aid to those in need in Scotland.

Mr. John MacKay

I refer the hon. Member to the replies given by my right hon. Friend on 30 January to the hon. Member for Glasgow, Garscadden (Mr. Dewar).

Mr. Ernie Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will publish details of his plans to release food from European Economic Community intervention food stores within Dundee and Tayside; what charity organisations will be involved in its distribution and what criteria will be used in deciding to whom such foods will be distributed.

Mr. John MacKay

The following charitable organisations have agreed to co-operate in arranging the distribution of free food in Scotland:

  • Salvation Army
  • Women's Royal Voluntary Service
  • Age Concern Scotland
  • 534
  • Royal British Legion Scotland
  • Help the Aged
  • British Red Cross
  • Church of Scotland Board of Social Responsibility
  • Catholic Social Care Commission
Food will be released, so far as possible, from stores conveniently located for the charities' distribution work. It is to be given to needy people whose resources have been further stretched by the recent extremely cold weather.
