HC Deb 18 December 1987 vol 124 cc795-6W
Mr. Hanley

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what experiments in wind power have been carried out in Northern Ireland; and to what factors he attributes the absence of wind power generating units in the Province.

Mr. Viggers

Northern Ireland Electricity is presently undertaking a study of the benefits of wind-powered electricity generation but there have been no practical experiments.

The Industrial Development Board has provided a research and development grant to a Northern Ireland company to manufacture a wind turbine for installation elsewhere in the United Kingdom.

The absence of wind-power generating units is largely attributable to the need to be satisfied on the long term reliability and economics of such installations.
