To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the average time a person is held in prison on remand awaiting trial.

Information on the average time spent on remand in prison department establishments is published annually in "Prison Statistics, England and Wales", table 2(a) of the latest issue, for 1986, Cm. 210, copies of which are in the Library.
