Mr. Jack

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services whether district health authorities are required to know the cost of care per patient by specialty in order to make valid bids for a share of funds allocated under the national waiting lists initiative.

Mr. Newton

When proposing projects for support from the 1987–88 waiting list fund health authorities gave the numbers of additional patients who could be treated for the funding requested. In most cases this was the marginal cost of treating additional patients and was less than either the full or average cost of patient care for the treatments planned. This approach will be adopted for projects funded in 1988–89.

Mr. Goodlad

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what are the current waiting lists for(a) examinations, (b) operations and (c) beds in each specialty in each hospital in (i) the Crewe, (ii) the Chester and (iii) the Halton health districts; and what were the comparable figures at a convenient date in each of the last eight years.
