HC Deb 17 December 1987 vol 124 cc658-9W
Sir John Farr

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if he is satisfied with the quality and quantity of job training for the textile and knitwear industry; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Nicholls

My Department does not collect detailed information on the amount or nature of training undertaken by individual employers. This reflects the Government's view that responsibility for training rests primarily with industry. Although I am generally satisfied that there is a commitment to training in the textile and knitwear industry, I believe that greater investment is called for if the industry is to be competitive in world markets.
