Ms. Harman

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will give, region by region, the percentage change in average available daily beds for each district health authority for the years 1979–80 and 1986–87.

The available information for the years 1979 and 1986 is given in the table. Over the same period the number of in-patient and day cases treated rose from nearly 6 million to nearly 74½. million, an increase of about 25 per cent.
