HC Deb 17 December 1987 vol 124 c664W
Mr. Wigley

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will publish a table showing for each of the nine health authorities in Wales the estimated cost of the absence of central funding of wage awards by his Department over the past two years.

Mr. Grist

The cost of pay awards borne by district health authorities over the past two years in excess of central funding is estimated as follows:

1986–87 £ million 1987–88 £ million
Clwyd 0.453 0.403
East Dyfed 0.292 0.258
Gwent 0.573 0.482
Gwynedd 0.300 0.261
Mid Glamorgan 0.669 0.584
Powys 0.132 0.117
South Glamorgan 0.770 0.659
West Glamorgan 0.454 0.405
Pembrokeshire 0.093 0.091

Note: Estimates based on actual settlements for review bodies' staff (ie medical and dental, nurses and midwives and the professions allied to medicine) and for other staff at 6 per cent. settlement has been assumed for 1986–87 and a 5 per cent. settlement for 1987–88. Firmer estimates for other staff would require detailed information from individual authorities about the staff in post and could be provided only at disproportionate cost.
