§ 37. Mr. CorbynTo ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if his Department is in a position to estimate the annual production figures for fish farms over the next three years; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. GummerThe development of fish farm output must depend upon market conditions. However, we estimate that annual production from the farming of fish (principally salmon and trout) in the United Kingdom could rise by about 10,000 tonnes a year, exceeding 60,000 tonnes by 1990. Most of the increase will be in salmon production.
§ 58. Mr. DunnachieTo ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he has any plans to encourage research and development programmes designed to promote fish farming in species other than salmon, trout and shellfish; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. GummerThe fisheries Departments and the Sea Fish Industry Authority (with funding from the Highlands and Islands Development Board) are engaged in research into, and development of, the cultivation of other species of fish, particularly halibut and Dover sole.
