§ Mr. SpearingTo ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the policy of Her Majesty's Government, and what advice it has given to ambulance authorities, concerning the supply of defibrillators to all emergency ambulance vehicles maintained by public funds.
§ Mrs. CurrieWe have endorsed the training of emergency ambulance crews in advanced techniques, which includes the use of defibrillators. Our policy guidance is set out in a circular to health authorities (DA(84)12), a copy of which is in the Library.
The extent to which advanced training is given is for those health authorities responsible for managing ambulance services to decide, taking into account local circumstances and the types and locations of health service facilities in the area.
