Whether aircraft carrying radioactive material of any kind are required to have the permission of the state through whose airspace they are flying; whether in particular radioactive materials flown from the United Kingdom to Japan pass through Canadian airspace with the explicit permission of the Canadian Government; what are the insurance provisions under which these flights take place; and whether they have received any comments on the adequacy of these provisions from the Canadian Government.
§ The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Lord Glenarthur)British registered aircraft carrying radioactive materials conform with conditions laid down for overseas non-scheduled flight clearances. These vary from state to state. Where prior permission is required of a state through whose airspace such an aircraft flies, this is obtained.
No radioactive material is currently sent to Japan from the United Kingdom by air. Some material of low radioactivity is transported by sea.
