What, within the science budget, is the sum allocated to arctic research and how it is to be distributed.

The sum allocated to arctic research from the Science Budget in 1986–87 was £1,579,000, of which the Natural Environment Research Council spent £454,000 and the Science and Engineering Research Council £1,125,000.

The NERC expenditure was for research grants and studentships. SERC spent £27,000 on marine technology and £1,098,000 on arctic research relating to astronomy and planetary sciences.
