§ The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Education and Science (Baroness Hooper)The sum allocated to arctic research from the Science Budget in 1986–87 was £1,579,000, of which the Natural Environment Research Council spent £454,000 and the Science and Engineering Research Council £1,125,000.
The NERC expenditure was for research grants and studentships. SERC spent £27,000 on marine technology and £1,098,000 on arctic research relating to astronomy and planetary sciences.
