HC Deb 10 December 1987 vol 124 c264W
15. Mr. Roger King

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what steps he is taking to increase teaching in education for mutual understanding in schools.

Dr. Mawhinney

On 14 September I announced a new initiative in education for mutual understanding and allocated additional resources for this purpose. As part of this initiative there will be greater emphasis on EMU in the training of teachers and increased support from the Department's inspectorate. Funding for voluntary groups involved in inter schools' work will also be enhanced.

19. Mr. Barry Porter

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland when he last met schoolchildren in Enniskillen to promote education for mutual understanding.

Dr. Mawhinney

I have not spoken directly to these children since the tragic events of Remembrance Sunday. In addressing local sixth formers at Fermanagh college of further education in September last year I took the opportunity of emphasising the importance of mutual understanding when launching "The General Lesson", a copy of which is in the Library.
