HC Deb 08 December 1987 vol 124 cc150-1W
63. Mr. Allan Roberts

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what amount of the defence budget in quantity and percentage terms is spent on protecting and safeguarding ancient monuments and historic buildings(a) nationally and (b) on Salisbury plain.

Mr. Freeman

Total expenditure within the defence budget for the protection and safeguarding of ancient monuments and historic buildings cannot be separately identified from general maintenance expenditure.

However, resulting from the "Salisbury Plain Training Area Archaelogical Working Party Report 1984–1985", expenditure for that area can be identified and during 1987–88 £98,500 has been allowed for and will be spent on protecting archaelogical features. PSA figures produced for 1985–86 works expenditure on the Government historic estate included an MOD element of £24 million, which related to the urban estate only.
