§ Mr. Simon HughesTo ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether appropriate funding will be made available to Goldsmiths college, London, in order to secure its incorporation into the University of London; and if he will make a statement.
Mr. JacksonI wrote to the vice-chancellor of London university on 20 November giving the following information about the amounts that my right hon. Friend is prepared to make available for the funding of Goldsmiths college over the next three academic years.
£ million 1988–89 1989–90 1990–91 (August-March) 13.66 12.96 7.61 Less Science1 0.56 0.34 Net Total 13.66 12.40 7.27 1 Negotiations are continuing about the possible transfer of Goldsmiths' Science courses to other institutions. While it has not proved possible to provide a precise year-on-year match between the available funding and the amounts which the college considered would be necessary to enable it to operate as a UGC and university court-funded school of London university, I understand that it should be possible for the college to make the required adjustments in the phasing of its expenditure. In addition 582W the Secretary of State has also indicated his willingness to transfer the following amounts to the universities Vote to meet the costs of restructuring.
Financial year £ 1988–89 39,000 1989–90 128,000 1990–91 160,000
