HC Deb 01 December 1987 vol 123 cc536-7W
Mr. Evennett

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether his Department has any system for monitoring the incidence and frequency of injuries to school pupils taking part in sports; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Dunn

My Department does not collect these figures but monitors the general incidence of injuries. Educational establishments, as places of employment, are covered by the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1985 (RIDDOR) made under the Health and Safety at Work Act, etc. 1974. Local education authorities and other education employers are thereby required to provide the Health and Safety Executive, with which my Department works closely, with written details of specified major injuries sustained by persons (including pupils) for whose activities they are responsible, within seven days of an accident occurring.

This legislation is the responsibility of my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Employment.
