To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he will indicate the change that has taken place in teacher-to-pupil ratios since 1979.

Mr. Dunn

The overall pupil-teacher ratio in maintained nursery, primary and secondary schools in England has fallen from 18.9 in 1979 to 17.3 in 1987.

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will give the latest figures for teacher-to-pupil ratios in primary and secondary schools.

In January 1987, the pupil-teacher ratios in maintained primary and secondary schools in England were 21.9 and 15.6 respectively.
