HC Deb 01 December 1987 vol 123 c513W
Mr. Worthington

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what proportion of spending in (i) Strathclyde and (ii) Scotland as a whole on(a) primary education, (b) secondary education, (c) further education and (d) nursery education was met by Government grant and what proportion was met by local authorities, in 1979 and 1987, or the latest available date.

Mr. Lang

It is not possible to provide a breakdown as requested. Government grant in respect of local authority relevant expenditure, aggregate exchequer grant, is composed of specific grants and the rate support grant. There are no specific grants available to finance any one of the broad categories of expenditure specified. RSG, by far the largest element of AEG, is paid in support of local authorities' revenue generally and is not hypothecated to individual services. It is not therefore possible to express RSG as a proportion of expenditure on particular services.
