Dr. Brayasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science by how much the increase in the science budget which he announced on 1 April exceeds the cost to the research councils of the recent university salaries settlement as it applied to staff employed on research council grants and fellows supported by research councils.
§ Mr. WaldenAbout £3.5 million; but there is no simple direct relationship between the academic pay settlement and the additional £15 million for the science budget, announced by my right hon. Friend on 1 April. This additional money has been made available to sustain the work of our most able scientists and their teams.
