HC Deb 02 April 1987 vol 113 c590W
27. Mr. Alton

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what studies his Department is conducting into the effects of deprivation in inner city areas.

Mr. Mellor

The Home Office research and planning unit carries out a substantial programme of research on the effects of crime in deprived areas. The British crime survey (of which there will be a further sweep later this year) provides the broader picture. Detailed studies include work on racial attacks, on crime prevention in urban areas, on the effects of housing on crime and the problems of inner-city housing estates. The 1986–87 programme of the research and planning unit is in the House of Commons Library and the 1987–88 programme will be published in June this year.
