HL Deb 28 October 1986 vol 481 c705WA
Lord Kennet

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether the Royal Navy conducts exercises with United States warships equipped with the Aegis fire control system, and if so whether it is the case that this system is designed automatically to discern "hostile intent", choose an "appropriate" weapon, and fire it first, which does not accord with the Rules of Engagement under which the Royal Navy operates.

Lord Trefgarne

: The Royal Navy has taken part in exercises with a wide variety of United States warships, including some equipped with the Aegis fire control system. It is not our practice to comment on the detailed operational capabilities of allied vessels.
