HC Deb 21 October 1986 vol 102 c780W
Mr. Mudd

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will set uniform standards for the intensity and form of audible safe-to-cross signals designed to assist blind persons who use pedestrian crossings.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

All pelican crossing equipment have a facility for adjusting the audible signal level. This is set to suit site conditions. Because of the wide variations in site conditions, and ambient noise levels, I do not consider it appropriate to set a uniform standard. 'We are looking at ways of making the adjustment automatic.
