HC Deb 21 October 1986 vol 102 cc864-5W
Mr. Kennedy

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will introduce regulations to ensure the clear labelling of irradiated food; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Currie

We have no plans at present for further amendments to the Food (Control of Irradiation) Regulations, 1967, which in effect prohibit the process and the importation and marketing of irradiated foods for general use. In due course, we will consider the "Report on the Safety and Wholesomeness of Irradiated Foods" by the Advisory Committee on Irradiated and Novel Foods which has advised that food irradiated up to an overall average dose of 10 kilogray is safe for human consumption. The report included a recommendation by the Food Advisory Committee that irradiated foods and food containing irradiated ingredients should be clearly indicated as such throughout manufacture and at the point of sale.
