By the terms of Article 6 of the North Atlantic Treaty of 1949, as amended by the protocol to it on the accession of Greece and Turkey in 1951, an armed attack for the purposes of Article 5 of the Treaty is deemed to include, inter alia, an attack,on the forces, vessels or aircraft of any of the Parties, when in or over … the Mediterranean Sea".
