§ 37. Ms. Richardsonasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what recent representations he has received on the subject of compensation for victims of crime.
§ Mr. MellorFollowing the publication earlier this year of the White Paper "Criminal Justice — Plans for Legislation" (Cmnd. 9658), we have received a number of representations from interested groups on the Government's proposals to extend the compensation powers of the criminal courts and to place the criminal injuries compensation scheme on a statutory footing. The proposals have been generally welcomed. In addition, we receive a steady flow of correspondence from hon. Members, members of the public and others on the powers of the courts in this area and on the working of the criminal injuries compensation scheme.
