§ 36. Dr. McDonaldasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department, for the most recent period of 12 months for which figures are available, what is the total number of crimes reported to the police which were not cleared up.
§ Mr. MellorNumbers of offences recorded and cleared up are published annually in the Command Paper "Criminal Statistics, England and Wales". The estimated number of notifiable offences recorded by the police in England and Wales in 1985 but not cleared up is 2,215,000 excluding offences of criminal damage of value £20 or under. Because an offence may be recorded and cleared up in different years it is possible to give only an approximate figure.
