asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is the number of frigates and destroyers commissioned at the present time, how many are under construction, and whether any further keels will be laid in the next twelve months.

The 1986 force level for destroyers and frigates is 54, as listed in Annex C to Volume 1 of the 1986Statement on the Defence Estimates. There are currently 11 frigates on order. Because of changes in construction methods, keel-laying is no longer a formal milestone for frigates. Construction of the three Type 23 frigates ordered earlier this year is scheduled to commence within the next 12 months.
