§ Mr. Cohenasked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will call for a report from the chairman of British Rail about what progress it is making to rectify the charges of inequality contained in the 1985 Equal Opportunities Commission's report on British Rail's recruitment and employment policies; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. David MitchellNo. Recruitment and employment policies are matters for the British Railways Board to decide within the framework of the law. I welcome the action that the board has take since receiving the Commission's report, including the restatement of its equal opportunities policy in a "Working Guide", a copy of which I am placing in the Library.
